Food Network chef says it's not as hard as it looks

MARQUETTE -- Most of us find ourselves eating on the run at least a few times a month.  However, nutritionists say if you're not careful about what you're eating during that time, it can really set back a weight-loss regime or foster long-term, unhealthy dining habits.

Fried, packaged and quick is the direction many turn to fight that hunger urge when time is short.  Dietitians say it's often the time we're most reckless with our diets.

"When you eat on the run, you tend to make the worst choices," said Michele Boehner of Marquette General.

But it doesn't have to be that way; Marquette General dietitians say there are healthy options.

If you're shopping in a hurry, it's best to stick to the perimeter of the store and stock up on fruits, vegetables, lean meats and dairy.  Then you should plan ahead and create portioned baggies for snacks on the run.  If you're forced to eat something prepackaged, dietitians say it's important to check the label for nutrients that are not only good for you, but also will fill you up.

"There may not be a difference in calories, but there's definitely a difference in nutrient density," Boehner said.

Some say it's possible to cook well for yourself on the run, it just takes a little preparation.  Food Network professional chef Michelle Bommarito says her goal is to encourage people to live in a state of constant readiness.

"Always have vegetables on hand," said Bommarito.  "Olive oil, lemon juices, any kind of seasoning, special sauce, peppers, also some type of protein needs to be available."

She says you should be able cook once and be able to eat four to five times with it, storing food in glass containers for best results.
