LAKE LINDEN -- A Lake Linden biotech company has been awarded nearly half a million dollars for research. The grant is aimed at developing agricultural products to be sold worldwide and to add jobs locally.
The Nitrate Elimination Company uses enzymes to solve environmental problems. Staff already measures nitrate in water and quality of soil.
The grant will help develop a product that will measure phosphate in soil that's easy for farmers and homeowners to buy and use on their own.
"The main goal of this project is to help farmers control their fertilizer applications so they put on enough so they get great yields but not so much so that the excess just gets into the water and is wasted and causes trouble for someone else downstream," said NEC Vice President, Ellen Campbell.
The tool developed will measure color density to determine the quantity of phosphate and other chemicals.
