GLADSTONE -- A lot of kids use the Internet for school and for fun, but the Michigan State Police are cautioning parents to keep a close eye when their children are online.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, one in five children receive unwanted sexual solicitations online. That's why kids, especially younger ones, should have adult supervision when they're online.
It's best if computers are placed in a visible part of the home and beware when sharing personal information, because people on the Web aren't always who they seem.
"Well, law enforcement would get involved when the parent contacts us and lets us know of the situation, and then we can take each situation independently and judge if a criminal investigation is warranted," said State Trooper Geno Basanese.
State police advise kids to immediately tell a trusted adult if they come across something or someone that makes them feel uncomfortable.
