85 percent of all car seats, nationwide, are installed improperly

MARQUETTE TWP. -- Members of "Kids Always Ride Safely" provided free car seat checks at North Star Academy in Marquette Township Saturday.  This group travels across the U.P., visiting schools and car dealerships.

The process to check for defects and properly fit and install the car seats takes about 30 minutes per child, per seat.

"You might want to expect to stay for a little while because it isn't just a quick tug and check," says safety technician Sue Girard-Jackson. "There is never a parent that leaves here that says, 'I knew everything that they told me,' so they learn something new at each and every one of these events."

Michigan law states that children need to be in an appropriate child restraint up until age eight or when the child reaches a height of four feet nine inches.
