ONTONAGON COUNTY -- James Griffin of Ontonagon County has been found guilty on a lesser charge of inadequate care of four to ten animals.

The trial went to jury deliberation on Thursday afternoon.

Griffin was originally charged of animal cruelty after more than 10 animals were discovered on his property in January of 2011.  Opening arguments were given on Wednesday, along with witness testimony stating the animals were living in feces and urine.

Closing arguments were give on Thursday after Griffin gave his testimony.  The prosecution argued that the jury only needs to decide if the animals were given proper and adequate care, defined as food, shelter and access to medical care.

The maximum sentence Griffin can receive is two years, and his sentencing will be held on October 24.

The defense stated that adequate care means that the animals were not abused and not malnourished.
