Bear shot dead

ST. IGNACE (AP) -- Michigan wildlife officials say a 49-year-old bear hunter fatally shot a 220-pound black bear after it attacked him while he was perched in a tree stand in the Upper Peninsula.

The Department of Natural Resources says the attack happened Sunday night near the village in Mackinac County.  The DNR says the hunter from the mid-Michigan community of Shepherd sustained non-life threatening lacerations to his legs.

The DNR says it was told the female bear and three cubs approached the tree stand, climbed up the tree and clawed at the hunter, and the hunter shot the bear with his rifle.

DNR Lt. Skip Nagy tells the Detroit Free Press that the bear died of its wounds.  Nagy says shooting a female bear accompanied by cubs generally is prohibited except for self defense.
