Officials say security has dramatically increased since 9/11
ESCANABA -- Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and airport security has increased dramatically because of it.
Delta County Airport officials say the airport is now a more controlled, secured place. The security checkpoints are similar to ones in bigger airports around the country. People used to be able to walk on the airfield, but after 9/11, they can't any longer.
And although there's no space to separate general aviation from commercial airlines, the ground handlers do closely monitor who comes near the passenger planes.
“Well, in an emergency plan,” explains Delta County Airport manager, Connie Ness, “the first thing you're going to do is notify the authorities, notify FAA, and yes, if it's an emergency, that requires closing down the airport. And that would happen immediately.”
Officials said they haven't had any major issues, and the majority of passengers are very cooperative in following the guidelines.
