AUTRAIN TOWNSHIP -- Here in the Upper Peninsula, we're always looking for ways to honor our veterans, and a community in Alger County is now recognizing all of its veterans, reaching as far back as the Civil War.

On Friday afternoon, dozens of people gathered at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain Township for the dedication of a new veterans memorial.  The memorial took about three years to put together.  The $35,000 project was funded strictly by donations; that included donated labor and materials.

Some members of the community also purchased paving bricks for the site.  The dedication ceremony featured military demonstrations, songs and speakers.

"Today commemorates the final dedication of the memorial to the township," said Project Manager Herbert Brown.  "And we're very proud to honor our former veterans, our present veterans, and our future veterans."

The dedication was followed by a luncheon at the town hall.
