The last day of the Houghton County fair belonged to the horses

HANCOCK -- One of the biggest equestrian attractions at the Houghton County Fair?  The draft horse, each weighing in at about 2,000 pounds and towering over their handlers.

The fair usually features at least ten of the giants, but this year, there were only two entries.

Organizers blame the economy.

"We've, in past years, had a very large show," says draft superintendent Kathy Caspary.  "A lot of horses from different parts of the U.P., but because of the gas prices and everything, it costs a lot."

The two Percheron draft horses that did show were both from the U.P. and won first and second place.  They were judged on confirmation, or their physicality, and on their pulling capability.
