MARQUETTE -- With the recent growth of kayaking in the Upper Peninsula, in particular Lake Superior, there's been several incidents where kayakers put themselves in danger.

Common issues that lead to problems involve not checking the weather, paddling out into conditions when you don't have the skills you need, and not possessing the right equipment.

"Use appropriate gear in appropriate settings," said Down Wind Sports co-owner Bill Thompson.  "And those sit-up-top and recreational kayaks with only one bulkhead really don't belong on Lake Superior."

Thomspon says that all kayaks on Lake Superior should have two bulkheads and spray skirts to keep water from filling the cockpit.

The Marquette YMCA and Down Wind Sports are both willing to teach kayaking skills to anyone interested.
