MARQUETTE -- It has been one full year for the roundabout in Marquette, and law enforcement say it's has been a resounding success.

The roundabout was opened to motorists last August, replacing the old bypass.

Marquette City Police say that since the roundabout opened, they have seen a significant drop in the number of accidents, especially serious ones.  There have been only six accidents in that area in the last year.  The reason for drop, police say, is the reduced speed.  The old bypass had speed limits of 35 miles an hour, while the roundabout is only a speed limit of 15.

"We had a lot of northbound traffic coming off of Front Street, merging onto the bypass," said Marquette City Police Officer Tim Forslund.  "A lot of people were taking chances when they had a break in the traffic, and they would shoot across, but then you would have the cars doing 35."

The roundabout will officially be one year old on August 20.
