ALGER COUNTY -- Two people were rescued from Lake Superior along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Wednesday around 5 p.m.
Ar Alain Lamer, 57, and 55-year-old Bonnie Toevs were kayaking along the lakeshore when one of the kayaks flooded due to waves reaching four feet. The pair swam to the base of the cliffs, keeping the second kayak with them. They then used a paddle to wave to a nearby Pictured Rocks cruise boat.
The Alger County Sheriff's Department was called, but the waves were pushing the rescue boats to the shore, causing rescuers to anchor about 50 yards from the kayakers.
Sheriff Hughes used a water rescue suit to reach Lamer and Toevs. Hughes helped Lamer get back in his kayak, allowing him to paddle to the rescue boat.
Toevs claimed she could make it to the rescue boat and began to swim to the vessel, accompanied by Sheriff Hughes.
Carl Hanson, an experienced kayaker and guide from Munising, arrived and aided Toevs to the rescue boat. She grabbed the stern of Hanson's kayak as he paddled to the rescue boat.
Both Lamer and Toevs were in good condition and required no treatment from rescuers.
The Pictured Rocks National Shoreline park rangers were unable to locate the submerged kayak.
