MARQUETTE COUNTY -- A new construction project in the works may slightly disrupt some plans of jetting out of Sawyer International Airport.
Beginning August 15 through September 30, the Michigan Department of Transportation will close portions of the M-94 bridge over the CN Railroad east of M-553.
In a routine test, MDOT determined portions of the bridge deteriorated and posed safety risks for motorists.
"MDOT inspects all of our bridges on a two-year cycle," said Andy Sikemma of the Michigan Department of Transportation. "In those inspections we look for any of the structure that might be deteriorated or have some other type of problem."
Once the project is completed, previously banned heavy trucks and motor vehicles will be permitted on the bridge.
The cost for the reconstruction is estimated at $250,000.
A local contractor, Associated Construction, took on the project.
