ISHPEMING -- Approximately 500 people have signed up so far to get down and dirty and compete in this month's Suicide Mud Plunge 5-K Adventure Run.
That's more than double organizers' original goal of 200, but now they need additional volunteers to help run a larger than expected event.
The adventure run will take place on paths and natural mud pits with obstacles near Suicide Bowl between Negaunee and Ishpeming.
Volunteers are needed to setup, direct traffic, help people register, and tear down at the end of the event.
"I know a lot of people are interested in this event, they just don't, maybe, want to run it this year, but maybe they want to come out and watch. And so I'm hoping those people will come forward and say, hey I'll volunteer! You get a free t-shirt, you get to watch the event up close, " said organizer, Elizabeth Peterson.
The mud plunge takes place August 27 with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Volunteer shifts can be anywhere from an hour to a full day.
