NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Many motorists may have noticed a bumpy ride on their way from Marquette to Negaunee, and recently, crews have hit the road to correct the problem.
The bumps are the result of the raised joints in the asphalt, caused by extreme heat in the summer and frost in the winter.
The Michigan Department of Transportation has had crews on U.P. roads all summer to grind down the bumps in order to provide a smoother ride for motorists. US-41 in Negaunee was paved in the 1950s and resurfaced many times, as recently as 2006, making a prime target for swelling joints.
"It's not uncommon to see a road of that age and the type of work that we've done on it to start seeing bumps start showing up in that five-year range," said MDOT Service Manager Andy Sikkema. "We go through, we grind as many as we can and try to keep up with the maintenance."
MDOT officials want to remind motorists to use caution when approaching crews grinding bumps.
