MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commission approved a motion for the city manager to entertain a bid for the sale of a portion of the Heartwood Forest.

The possible sale would be for 100 acres located adjacent to the Marquette County Solid Waste Authority landfill in Sands Township.

However, several commissioners expressed dissatisfaction with the current $60,000 bid, and stated they would like to see the land appraised for its actual value.

The facility would not use the land to extend the landfill.

"There's plenty of capacity on the currently sight, but we do need sand.  This part of the Heartwood property is zoned for mineral extraction anyway.  We would leave a wide buffer around any environmentally sensitive areas," said Marquette County Solid Waste Director, Richard Aho.

The city manager's office will bring a figure to the commission at a future meeting before they make a final decision on whether to sell the land.
