REPUBLIC TOWNSHIP -- There was a close call for one young swimmer on the Michigamme River in Republic Township, when a Michigan State Trooper came to the rescue.

According to Michigan State Police, Trooper Donna Haw from the St. Ignace Post was swimming with her family at the Republic Beach when someone called for help.

Haw heard someone calling for help, and that's when she spotted an 11-year-old boy in distress, waving his hands and going underwater.  She swam out to him, pulled him to shore and located his family.

Emergency medical officials checked out the boy, and he was fine.

The boy was from Wisconsin, visiting the area.
