There was plenty of traffic in the air in Sands Township this weekend during the model aircraft Fly-a-palooza
SANDS TWP. -- Fly-a-palooza, sponsored by the Sands Model Airplane Club, has been going on for about 20 years. Members show up with their aircrafts, either model helicopters or airplanes, and fly them.
A few familiar faces made a special appearance on a TV6 helicopter.
So what does it take to fly your own aircraft?
"You don't need anything but just a little bit of money to get started," says club secretary Bob O'Conner. "You can get started for as little as $79 for a smaller, less sophisticated type, and then, of course, the sky's the limit, based on how big you want to go with your aircraft and how much money you want to spend."
If you want to fly with a club, you'll also need a membership with the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
During the winter, they fly indoor models at the Superior Dome.
