One U.P. community is awaiting tens of thousands of dollars to fix its harbor breakwall
GRAND MARAIS (AP) -- Reader's Digest insists the checks are in the mail.
Earlier this year, four Michigan communities were told they were winners in an online contest to name public projects that deserved cash. But months later, Grand Marais, Albion, St. Johns and Armada Township still haven't received the money.
The Detroit Free Press says (http://bit.ly/pLzteq ) Reader's Digest is promising the checks should arrive by Monday or Tuesday. The newspaper says the communities were contacted after the Free Press began calling the magazine.
Reader's Digest spokesman Michael Penn says "everybody is being paid in full."
Grand Marais in the Upper Peninsula is getting $40,000 to fix a seawall and keep the harbor open. Albion, St. Johns and Armada Township are each expecting $10,000 for their projects.
