MARQUETTE -- Flick your cigarette into the street in downtown Marquette and it just might end up in the waters of Lake Superior.
That's the message the Superior Watershed Partnership is trying to get across with their pollution prevention "Red Bucket Project".
When it rains, litter in downtown Marquette and Third Street is actually carried down storm drains that empty out onto Lake Superior's beaches.
Since the city smoking ordinance, the amount of complaints about this litter have spiked, possibly due to a greater number of people smoking outside.
Their solution? Free red disposal buckets for local businesses.
"I think people care enough about Lake Superior, smokers included, that, if they realize what they were doing, they would stop, and that's part of the goal of this program," said Watershed Executive Director, Carl Lindquist.
The buckets were provided by a grant from the Marquette County Community Foundation.
