MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Charter Working Group presented their recommendation to the Marquette City Commission Thursday in a special morning meeting.

As expected, the group decided in a 6 to 1 vote that revising Marquette's 50-year-old charter was necessary.

The charter group found newer federal and state laws conflict with many of the charter's provisions.  Dollar inflation over the past half-century also proved to be reasons for a rewrite.

Marquette residents have until August 16 to fill out and submit petitions to the city clerk to run this November for a spot on the Charter Commission.

"I think it is essential that community members get involved.  This is a foundation document of a city.  If the last charter is an indication, it could last half a century.  So this is the time to get the word out to encourage people to participate so we can put forward a 21st century document," said Charter Working Group Chair, Robert Kulisheck.

The city clerk says his office will use a variety of ways to spread the word, including the Internet, print and public service announcements.
