CHATHAM -- According to TDS Telecom, by this time next year, many Alger County residents will have access to broadband Internet for the first time.

Crews have been working since May to lay conduit throughout a 650-mile radius in Alger County.  So far they have installed 100 of the 125 miles of conduit and will soon begin placing fiber optic cable.

TDS officials say this will greatly change the way many people do things in Alger County.

"What it's going to do is open up the avenue for people to work from home," said David Moore, Manager of TDS Field Services.  "It will open up the avenue of people when they move in the area, possibly bringing their jobs with them.  It will give them that high speed opportunity which is the future of this country."

The project was made possible through an $8.6 million grant from the USDA Rural Development Division.

The expected completion date is June of 2012.
