MARQUETTE -- After a high number of drownings last summer, an effort has been underway to make the shorelines safer.
Friday, a water safety and recreation expo will be held at McCarty's Cove in Marquette.
The expo is sponsored by the National Weather Service, the Marquette Waterfront Safety Task Force, the YMCA, NMU, and the Michigan Sea Grant. It's designed to provide information on rip currents and channel currents and discuss rescue and safety efforts.
"If you're kind of aware of the currents, that they exist, and you know how to protect yourself against them, then the overall amount of drownings throughout the U.P. and the communities around will actually decrease quite a bit," said Keith Cooley of the National Weather Service.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at McCarty's Cove and is free and open to the public.
