EWEN -- Several firefighters in Ontonagon County are recovering after suffering heat exhaustion while battling a fire Wednesday night.
According to the Ewen Fire Chief, Dan Staff, the department was called out to 15365 Airport Road in Ewen at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived at the scene, firefighters saw flames shooting up through the roof of the garage and main home.
Chief Staff described the entire building as a house trailer with many additions.
Fire crews from Ewen and Bruce Crossing stayed on the scene until 1 a.m. Thursday morning.
The Bruce Crossing Fire Department was called in for water and personnel assistance. The Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department was also called in.
Due to the extreme heat, four firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion by Sonco Ambulance personnel. Chief Staff says they will be fine and noted that many other firefighters were quite wearied by battling both the fire and extreme weather conditions.
The owner was not home when the fire broke out. He arrived while crews were fighting the blaze.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation.
