There's a lot of "fishy" activity in Republic this weekend
REPUBLIC -- The 21st annual Republic Sportsman Club Fishing Derby kicked off, drawing quite the crowd--more than 400 anglers of all ages. Adults and kids under 12 were entered into two divisions.
Anglers dropped lines into the Michigamme River looking for pike, trout, and rock bass among others.
However, it's the biggest walleye that brings in the whopping main prize of $1,000--first prize for other fish is a hundred bucks.
Despite the hassles of planning the event, organizers say it's all worth it in the end.
"It puts a smile on my face. I love to see these people out here," says Sportsman Club President Charlie Hendrickson. "I just love everybody. I just like to see them smile, have a good time."
At the end of Saturday, the leading walleye isn't necessarily the winning one.
It'll have to hold one more day. The derby concludes Sunday after another full day of fishing.
