ESCANABA -- Hundreds came out to celebrate a legend in the Escanaba community Thursday night.
Dr. Donald Fitch was named the Michigan Academy Family Physician of the Year.
Fitch, who recently retired after 49 years of service, and his wife, Paddy, greeted friends, colleagues, and former patients at Danforth Place. He says he feels humbled by the turnout to his reception.
"It's been truly wonderful, very overwhelming," said Dr. Fitch.
"Dr. Fitch was my best friend. I don't know how to describe him, just as being a good fellow to know and work with and do things with," said Ftich's collegue, Dr. Ray Hosking.
Dr. Fitch has a long legacy at both Marquette General Hospital and OSF St. Francis Hospital.
