MARQUETTE -- The Coast Guard Station in Marquette opened its gates to the community for an open house Friday afternoon.
Coast Guard representatives say they wanted people to tour their new facility, which was built just a few years ago, and get a behind-the-scenes look at their daily operations.
Guests also saw their brand new 45-foot, $2 million search and rescue boat, called a Response Boat Medium, and most importantly, the Coast Guard was on hand to offer water safety tips for boaters.
"We are out to educate boaters, we are out to help people, and that's part of what today is, to educate people and show them what we do," said Joshua Kuhn of the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard Station Marquette was one of the first Department of Homeland Security facilities to earn a leadership certification for green buildings.
