Stephan Schultz performed CPR to save his friend's life
DICKINSON COUNTY -- An ATV ride with friends seemed like a good way to kick off the holiday weekend for Stephan Schultz.
While riding the ATV trails outside of Felch last Saturday morning, Schultz noticed one of the ATV side-by-sides flip into what appeared to be a shallow pond.
"We didn't really even think that there was anybody trapped in there, at first, until me and one other person saw a hand come out of the water," said Schultz.
His friend, Kathy Carne, was trapped underneath the ATV and on the verge of drowning. Schultz and several friends jumped in to save her. After several minutes, they were able to drag Carne out of the water, but she wasn't breathing. That's when Schultz started CPR and saved her life.
As a machine operator for CCI Systems in Iron Mountain, Schultz had taken CPR courses and took action.
"I noticed that she wasn't breathing and her lips were blue, and I didn't even think of anything. I just started doing CPR,” he said. “Probably about a minute later, she started to come back."
Schultz was able to stabilize Carne until paramedics arrived on scene. She was taken to Dickinson Memorial Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
For everyone involved, the accident is a reminder of how quick thinking saved the day and a life.
"I can still remember it pretty clear,” Schultz said. “I guess it's just one of those things that I don't think anybody out there will ever forget."
