MARQUETTE -- As of July 1, a new law will require sex offenders to provide more information as well as give the public tools to track offenders in their area.
Sex offenders will now have to provide additional information such as vehicle registration, employer information, and any e-mail addresses or screen names they may have.
In addition to the information, website users will be able to enter their address and see a map with all registered offenders within a mile radius. Users will also be able to sign up for e-mail alerts if an offender moves within a mile of them.
"They're going to have to sign and verify that it is true and that is complete," said Sgt. Kevin Dowling of the Michigan State Police. "If they don't do so, they're violating the sex offender registry law; they'll be subject to a criminal charge."
Offenders have been notified that they have until July 15 to comply with the new requirements.
