MARQUETTE -- At their meeting last month, residents and city commissioners took issue with the original proposed medical marijuana ordinance.

Monday night, City Attorney Ronald Keefe cited recent legislative action taking place downstate and recommended the commission wait to move forward with the ordinance.

"We do have a good feeling though if we keep our ordinance within the strict confines of the Medical Marihuana Act, I think we're going to be in good shape," says Keefe.

Other commissioners agreed that the ordinance itself could use some revision before being adopted by the city.

From a proposed ordinance to a proposed project:  Monday night, the committee for the planned Marquette Skate Plaza gave a presentation on where their funding sources stand, and why the plaza is necessary for the city.

"It's easy to get caught up in, 'Hey, we're building this for a group of kids who skate,' but I think this, again, really comes back to fundamentals for the community, which makes it exciting," says committee member Brad Jackson.

In an agreement between the committee and the commission, the commission agreed to give the committee $75,000 if they could raise $150,000 by June 30.  Right now there is $141,000 raised for the Marquette Skate Plaza.  Several city commissioners implied that they would honor that agreement but plan to further discuss it at their next meeting.

From a proposed project, to a completed one:  the boardwalk at Founder's Landing is nearly finished, in time for its June 30 completion deadline.  The question is whether or not it will be open for the Fourth of July.

Issues with lighting and the debris from the nearby construction site were taken up by the commission.

"That boardwalk is really a critical part because it delineates for the public that although that site, site 3, may be privately-owned, the public owns the water," says commissioner Fred Stonehouse.

No clear decision was made on whether or not the boardwalk will be open for next week's holiday.

The only clear decision made was to relieve the U.P. Sled Dog Association of fees associated with this year's U.P. 200 race.  The association was charged more than $5,000 for services rendered by police and public works employees.

The commission voted to eliminate the charges, but not without some discussion first.
