The 125-year-old Foster City Post Office could be closed later this summer by the USPS
FOSTER CITY -- Foster City is the type of place you don't drive too fast through because you might miss it.
This small Dickinson County community is now rallying behind its 125-year-old landmark...the post office. To save money, the U.S. Postal Service is looking at closing the Foster City Post Office.
"We know that they have financial problems. We can't see how this would help the postal service save any money by closing the Foster City Post Office,” said Breen Township Supervisor Mick Beauchamp. “There's bigger fish to fry out there."
If the post office closes, customers would be forced to go to the Felch Post Office fives miles away.
Nationwide, the USPS has seen mail volume drop by 43 billion pieces over the last five years and needs to cut costs.
"The postal service is looking to save money, and one of the ways to do that is to consolidate operations,” said USPS Spokesperson Tim Ratliff in a phone interview Wednesday. “Customers will continue getting mail regardless of what happens, and they won't suffer any mail delay."
But to residents like Don Carlson, the post office represents Foster City's identity.
"I come here everyday to do my mail business and mail our letters,” said Carlson. “I'd hate to see it disappear on us after all of these years."
It's unclear how long the postal service will take to decide the fate of the Foster City Post Office. However, residents plan on making one final pitch to the USPS at a town hall meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. CST at Hardwood Hall in Breen Township.
