SANDS TOWNSHIP -- Race fans in the Sands Township are revving up for the opening day of the Sands Speedway this Saturday.

The former Thunder Valley Speedway was recently purchased by a group made up of U.P. racers.

The group has made several improvements to the quarter mile track such as grating and graveling pits, repaving on the track and improving and adding more seating in the stands.

The inaugural race will feature four classes and several racers from out of the area.

Organizers say this will provide an exciting day at the races.

"The local racers that have been here a while, we all have pretty competitive cars and with the cars from out of town coming in it should be very interesting," said Co-owner Stan Wittler.  "Hopefully we'll put on a good show and hopefully the weather will cooperate and have a good time."

The races start at 5 p.m. with time trials starting at 4 p.m.
