HIAWATHA NATIONAL FOREST -- Some people experience culture in Shanghai, Rome, or Paris.  But if you're looking to experience a different kind of culture, you might come here to the Upper Peninsula.

That's where one group, Our Global Kids, from Detroit, chose to visit.

"The fresh water, the Great Lakes...we have the largest freshwater in the state, for one; we definitely want to emphasize Michigan and students utilizing our parks system," says Dellashon Dicresce of Our Global Kids.

The non-profit works to introduce urban youth to the environment.  That's why La Shea Garrett says she signed her family up.

"I didn't do this as a child, and I'm an only child so there's a lot of things that my mom just didn't do because of her work and school or she wasn't into it, and I said I would do the opposite if I became a mom, and every opportunity I get to expose our children, I do it," says Garrett.

The Garretts are one of 11 families exploring the U.P. this week.  Tuesday, they were at Hiawatha National Forest where they tried their hand at kayaking for the first time.

"It was kind of scary because I don't know how to swim, so I don't want to tip over, but it was fun," says Tia Garrett.

The Garretts and the other families will continue taking in all the sites the U.P. has to offer until this Friday.

Some of the other stops on their itinerary?  Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Au Sable Point Lighthouse.

Organizers hope that seeing the wonders of their own state will inspire the kids to embark on many more adventures.
