MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Apportionment Commission met Thursday morning to decide how they're going to deal with appeals to their redistricting plan.
In early May, the board voted to decrease the number of Marquette County Commissioners elected in the 2012 elections from nine to six. They also created a split in Marquette Township.
Two appeals have been filed, and they both claim the new plan violates the statute, which states districts should be created as equal and as practically as possible. It also adds, townships cannot be split.
"In Marquette County, given the nature of our geography and population, that's impossible to meet absolutely every one of those criteria," said Marquette County Prosecutor Gary Walker. "The courts recognize that."
The commission passed a motion Thursday indicating Walker will prepare documents responding to the appeals over the weekend.
If any of the commissioners disagree with his responses, they will meet again on Monday.
