BARAGA COUNTY -- Nearly two years after crews began clearing the site, the new facility for the Baraga County Memorial Hospital is officially open to public.
A big banner with the word "closed" written on it hangs in front of an entrance at the former hospital building, where moving crews were the only vehicles in the parking lot on Monday.
Admitted patients were moved to the new facility first, and now the physicians' clinic and pharmacy are also open.
The nearly $30 million project was financed by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
"This critical access hospital is really beautiful," said John Stindt, Senior Account Executive for Housing and Urban Development. "I've looked at it and it's really a state-of-the-art facility that'll be here for the long haul for the people of this community."
Hospital officials say the new facility will be an important tool for attracting talented physicians in such a rural area.
