CURTIS -- Church...it's a time when we can all come together. Well, in Curtis, they've been coming together to worship at St. Timothy Catholic Church for decades now.
However, time took its toll on the physical condition of the building. Since then, the church members have been dreaming of building a new church. That dream has finally come true.
"Here, we dedicate, today, a building, a church, a place to come and worship for this community. But, it is the community here itself that are the living stones of the living temple of God. And it is those good folks who will worship here, who are the true church in this community. And I would hope that other communities would be inspired by their example of faith," said Alexander Sample, Catholic Bishop of Marquette Diocese.
It took years and years of faithful dedication and monetary donations from the church members. The profits earned from countless fish fries, bake sales, raffles, and other fund-raisers helped to afford the construction of the new building. St. Timothy also received a matching grant in the fall of 2010 from the United States Catholic Church Extension Society.
It's been two years since the groundbreaking ceremony when the construction started. And now, it's finished.
"For visitors, for years to come, and residents, it's just a legacy that we're leaving here for the community. It's great to have this in Curtis," said Gary Graham of the building committee.
Friday, church members got to see the results of all their hard work. They held a two hour ceremony for the dedication of the church. It included a procession into the church and the blessing of the building itself.
In a time when churches are closing, it's hard to believe that a new one could be built. But it's the belief of the community of Curtis that's helped St. Timothy Catholic Church to become a reality.
