L'ANSE -- A proposed millage to support a new courthouse in Baraga County will go to voters this August.

The Baraga County Board of Commissioners decided to put the millage on the ballot after a series of town meetings showed strong support in the community.

Residents will be able to vote for or against a 20-year tax of 1.5 mills that could be used to renovate part or all of the current Baraga County Memorial Hospital or build a new facility.

"What the county board intends and the courthouse improvement committee recommends is that we conduct a survey over the next few months, and beyond that, to see what people in the county really want," said Joseph O'Leary of the Courthouse Improvement Committee.

The committee will continue holding town meetings to discuss the millage prior to the vote on August 2.
