HARVEY -- A group walking along the shores of the Great Lakes made their way through Marquette Monday to raise awareness of the abuse of water.

The annual Women's Water Walk is a group of volunteers that help bring water from Machias, Maine all the way to Saxon, Wisconsin.

The goal of the walk is to raise awareness about how water is being used and how it should be protected.

A group of six core members of an Anishinabe Tribe from Thunder Bay, Ontario with help from various volunteers helping along the way.

"The water is very, very precious to us, and it's like any species, they are protected, the eagles are protected, the animals are protected, the polar bears are protected, but the water doesn't seem to be protected by anyone or anything," said Josephine Mandeman, Water Walk Lead grandmother.

Tuesday, the group will hold a picnic at the Van Riper State Park at around 5:30 p.m.  Those that attend are asked to bring food to share and their own utensils.
