MARQUETTE -- Farmers, hunters, scientists and conservationists met Friday to address how wolf management is being implemented in the U.P. It was part of Michigan's wolf forum hosted by the Department of Natural Resources.
The management plan cannot currently include hunting because wolves have not been declared a game species in the legislature.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently made a move to delist the wolf as a federally endangered species in the Western Great Lakes.
Friday, the DNR collected these stakeholder's feedback about how this could impact wolf management.
"Folks also have to realize that the wolf management plan is not an operational plan," said DNR Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell. "It's not the nuts and bolts; it's the guiding principals on how we move forward after delisting."
The DNR will also be hosting a public information meeting 6 p.m. June 16 at Northern Michigan University about the wolf delisting proposal.
