MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Habitat for Humanity received a grant Thursday that will help them build at least 10 homes in the next two years. It's a nearly $300,000 grant funded by USDA Rural Development.
It's not the first time they've been awarded money by the USDA. This is the sixth cycle of the two year grant.
They're the only chapter of Habitat for Humanity in the U.P. to have this kind of relationship with the USDA.
The grant will only fund the overhead costs of Habitat for Humanity, which actually helps the community play a bigger role in impacting the lives of those in need.
"One hundred percent of the money that is donated, that we generate from our store, is all used for construction. None is used for overhead," said Executive Director of Marquette Habitat for Humanity Michael Shimon. "So that is the beauty of this type of a program."
In total, the USDA has granted $1.2 million to the Marquette County Habitat for Humanity.
