ISHPEMING -- After six weeks of training, students at Birchview Elementary School got their walking shoes ready for the big hike.  They hit the Iron Ore Heritage Trail Wednesday morning as a year-end celebration to their Safe Routes to School program.

It's funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield and is aimed at getting kids active.  The grant has made a Walking Club possible at the school.  Kids log how much they walk and are recognized for each mile.

One student has already reached 27 miles.

On Wednesday, the students prepared to walk two miles on the trail.

"The kids are fired up, and it's just so absolutely rewarding to see the kids celebrate and be able to take this two mile walk," said Susan Nelson of Blue Cross Blue Shield Community Relations.  "They're all fired up!"

The Walking Club will continue with the Blue Cross Blue Shield grant next year.
