NEGAUNEE -- The Facebook Story of the Day is about basement safety. Upper Peninsula residents are concerned with mold and other dangers lurking in the lowest level of their homes.
According to the Marquette County Health Department, the three most common basement problems include mold, radon and carbon monoxide, all three of which can be resolved if detected by the homeowner.
For radon, detection is key. All homes are at risk, and you can pick up a test kit at the Health Department for $12.
As for mold, it's often visible and causes respiratory problems for the homeowner. The solution is to hire a contractor to find the source of the moisture causing mold growth. After it's found, the contractor can fix a leaky spot and remove the mold.
As for carbon monoxide, health officers suggest getting a detector and notice changes in your family's health.
"Pay attention to the symptoms," said Marquette County Health Officer Fred Benzie. "Carbon monoxide will start with a headache. Everybody in the home has a headache, it's probably at least one time to suspect carbon monoxide."
