NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- The story of a couple stranded in the wilderness, resulting in one fatality, is not all that uncommon in the the Upper Peninsula.  The Sheriff's search and rescue team reminds us to be prepared if we head out into the woods.

First thing, before you head out, head to the store.  Bring at least two days of food and water supply.

Second, dress in layers.  Even in the spring and summer months, U.P. weather can be unpredictable.

Once you're on the trail, make sure you have a map and a GPS system.

Cell phones can also be helpful, but with spotty service, search and rescue encourages primitive communication methods as well.

"Tell somebody where you're going is a big thing, and tell them when you're going to be back," said Sgt. Errikk Decker of Marquette County Search & Rescue.  "That way, if you don't come back on time, search and rescue will be able to respond out there to look for you and have a general idea as to where to look."

Also, if you are on any medication, bring an extra supply in case you become stranded for several days.
