HOUGHTON -- Houghton fourth graders spent their morning making the Pewabic Community Garden a little more beautiful.

The students hung colorful clay bells, which they made in art class, on each post of the garden fence.  Along with the bells, many wrote a positive message to attach to the string.

The students were inspired by the Ben's Bells Project that was started by an Arizona family in an effort to encourage kindness.

"It's really good for them to see what their artwork can do beyond the classroom," said K-5 art teacher Melissa Hronkin.  "They can have an impact and be an integral part of the community.  So, to me, it's an important lesson."

After hanging the bells, the students sang a song they'd prepared in music class and got to run around in the sun as a part of a team building activity.
