GWINN -- In a time when many schools are having to make the tough decision to cut school nurses, one U.P. school is actually gaining one.
The Marquette County Health Department was recently awarded the "Clinical Child and Adolescent Health Center Grant" to Gwinn Area Schools. It's worth about $175,000 each year for five years which will fund a nurse practitioner and a part-time receptionist.
All the school has to do is to provide a location and equipment for a health center in the school, and every student can receive health care.
"We have a lot of families that possibly do not even have access to health care services," said Gwinn Schools Superintendent, Michael R. Maino. "This will provide services to everyone in our district, all the students in our district."
The school district, county health department and local health professionals are all collaborating for this effort.
The program will begin next fall.
