Making Third Street more like downtown
MARQUETTE -- Right now the two main business sections of Marquette are run separately: Third Street by the Village Business Association and the rest of the city by the Downtown Development Authority.
Now, after a year of discussion, the two are looking to combine their resources.
Monday afternoon, an informational meeting was held at Casa Calabria in Marquette for members of both organizations.
One of the goals is to get Third Street to look and feel more like downtown Marquette. Some of the preliminary ideas are brick-paved sidewalks, flags or banners, plants and trees.
"Becoming part of the business community and not just looking at Marquette as the downtown, more of a business community instead of just downtown, and Third Street, hoping to still keep our own identity but still becoming a part of the business community in general," said Jim Johnson of the Village Business Association.
The move would affect more than 250 businesses: about 150 members of the DDA and 90 in the VBA.
The merging would have to be approved by the Marquette City Commission.
