HOUGHTON -- A group of Boy Scouts are now prepared to handle a variety of first aid and wilderness emergencies.
The Scouts put their skills to the test during a four-part field exercise with mock victims. The scenarios included an unconscious person, a bicycle accident, someone choking and a camper with abdominal pains. The training activity was the final part of a three-week intensive course.
“In order to do this by other channels, it'd cost $250-$300 per student and we'd have to fly people up here,” said Dr. Kirk Lufkin. “So we thought we could put a course together that'd be meaningful and do it in a voluntary way.”
Twelve Scouts from troops based in Hancock, Houghton and Marquette participated in the wilderness training. They also received CPR certification.
