Hundreds of people attended the 6th annual Parade of Thanks
HOUGHTON -- Flags waved and patriotic songs played as local veterans paraded through downtown Houghton Saturday in honor of Armed Forces Day.
Hundreds of people attended the sixth annual Parade of Thanks to celebrate those who've served our country. This year's theme was "We can't thank you enough, but we're sure going to try."
Veterans in the parade and those who watched from the sidewalk clearly appreciated the community support.
"It gets bigger and better every year,” said Iraq veteran Derek Gagne. “It's amazing what these guys come up with and all they can give back to soldiers. After what we go through and give up and sacrifice, it just makes us feel like we did a good job."
"It means the world to me to have a parade up here in Houghton,” said Vietnam veteran Jeff Fuller. “It means a lot."
The parade had to make a last-minute route change because of on-going construction in Hancock. Instead, the floats took a detour along the Houghton waterfront.
"It worked out great,” said Jim Manderfield. “It kept traffic moving and it's actually a great spot to watch. We had grandchildren in the parade and we got to see everyone down here.”
As a special treat this year, organizers plan to send a video of the parade to veterans hospitals and troops serving overseas so that even more people can hear the Copper Country's message of thanks.
