Mr. Entertainer, Jim Clements, shares his love of performing around the U.P.
ESCANABA -- They call him Mr. Entertainer, and he's been singing and dancing at the Bishop Noa Home for the last 30 years.
Jim Clements is a musical therapist, and his passion is spreading cheer to others.
"Oh, I think it's about making people smile," said Clements. "Smiling is important. When you smile, you're alive, and I think that's wonderful."
He performs here once a month. His fans today are assisted living and nursing home residents, as well as apartment tenants.
"Oh, well, he likes to hug the girls, but he doesn't hug me," said resident, Jack Fineman. "Oh yeah. He’s a real ladies man. They all like him."
The Bishop Noa Home isn't the only place where Jim performs. He also travels around the U.P. and Wisconsin to perform at weddings, supper clubs, concerts, and fairs. He performs around 60 shows a month.
And he's had a love of performing for others for as long as he can remember.
"I'm a poor country boy," Clements said. "I was brought up on a farm. We were very poor, but we were very rich in many ways. It’s been wonderful because our whole family was musical. That’s how we entertained ourselves."
He has a collection of over 30,000 songs, but the residents here really enjoy fast-paced polkas and the oldies.
"Music is healthy," Clements said. "Remember the last thing that goes is your heartbeat, and that's rhythm. And that's what life's about. Our whole life is around rhythm. I think that's why I love music so much."
Bishop Noa books Jim for one hour a month, but the performances often extend to two hours because they just love his entertainment.
