ESCANABA -- Escanaba students participated in a safe route exercise where they walked, mapped, and logged safe and unsafe school routes Monday morning.
The four student groups were led by an Escanaba Middle School faculty member. Their mission was to locate problems like high sidewalk ridges and low-lying tree branches--all potential hazards to students who bike or walk to get to school.
From there, the pictures will be used to create a virtual tour on Google Earth.
The data will be compiled this summer in the hopes of getting federal money to fix these school route issues.
"'Cause it's not just for us; it's for everybody in our community that's walking around," said Middle School student, Gabrielle Wyckoff. "So if it helps us, it could help other people with their daily life and getting around."
Principal Steve Martin said a big safety issue is not having a crossing guard at 14th Street.
